RED PHOSPHORUS
So you’ve discovered Red Phosphorus. Welcome. We’re a team of 4 young artists with a burning passion to create. 4 proud New Yorkers, dreamers of crazy dreams. We release weekly content consisting of poetry, photography and personal stories to help you get to know us better. You can find all of this and more on our Instagram page. What else do we do besides share content weekly? We go a bit crazy and create chapbooks - short compilations of poetry and art that we will feature right here on this website. Every few months, you can expect us to release a bigger project like that. These explore themes such as the future, imperfection, passion and more.
Why Red Phosphorus? Red phosphorus is the highly reactive chemical in a matchbox that waits patiently until struck with a match, creating a burst of light instantaneously. We all started to create as members and editors of our high school literary magazine and we learned since then that we have an inner creative drive we want to keep tapping into. We don’t want to stop and we don’t want you to stop either. The child inside of us knew what to do. Think of something? Do it. Imagine a masterpiece? Paint it, even if your canvas is the bathroom wall. That little person knew what was up. We hope you join us on our journey of creating. Our own red phosphorus waits inside of us and as we discover ours, we hope you find yours too. Burn with us.
Max Kurant
Poet
Hey! I’m Max. I always like to create, to bring ideas into reality, and poetry is one of the ways I do that. You’ll usually find me starting some movement or organization and babbling on about changing systems and whatnot. For me, it all comes back to writing. Poetry is a beautiful tool of interpreting the world. Moreover, it’s a tool to reinterpret the world. To dare to imagine what can be. You’ll see a lot of this in my poetry. I explore ideas such as mental health, perfectionism, the future, and whatever my mind latches onto at the time. As I write this, it’s the city of Florence. Tomorrow it might be tomatoes. I hope you join me in my endeavors as I discover my own flame.
Laura Kramer
Visual Artist
Hi! I'm Laura. I've been a visual artist since I could hold things and I love almost all media. At the moment, most of my free time is spent painting plants; I've painted and drawn the onion in my icon like, 10 times this week. I'm also studying mechanical engineering, which doesn't seem to have anything to do with art, but creative expression is a tenet in my life now more than ever. Art activates parts of my mind that calculus could never reach, yet are still incredibly crucial to success in my field. Whatever you're doing, I encourage you to explore its connection with the arts, even if it just means doodling in your notes. I can assure you, it's there, and way more important than you think.
Brittnee Chen
Graphic Designer
Hi, I’m Brittnee. Two t’s and two e’s, thank you very much. I do graphic design and I have also had no formal training for it. Learning is a part of the creative process, whether it’s learning something about the subject that you’ve never noticed or finding out how to actually accomplish what you would like to. You just come up with something and then followthrough. That’s how I’d like to approach art. How about you?
